MSA ADVERTISING BOARD 'TOO DISTRACING'

THE first planning application for Downside’s M25 service station has been refused — much to the delight of councillors and residents.

On Wednesday last week, Elmbridge Borough Council refused the first of many expected applications for the motorway service area (MSA). The application, for a three-metre advertising board was turned down because it was “too big” and “would cause harm to the visual qualities of the area” — an area upon which a service station comprising a petrol station, a motel, shops, and 721 car-parking spaces are to be built.

CPRE: Downside Decision

From the Campaign to Protect Rural England website: Three years ago CPRE Surrey gave evidence at a Public Inquiry into proposed service stations at locations on the M25, M4 and M40. After a very long delay, the Secretary of State has issued his decision, namely that permission be granted for three of the six sites, including the M25 site at New Barn Farm, Downside, near Cobham.
